Frequently asked questions

Can I try Cord for free?

An arrow pointing up

Yes! Get started for free now - no credit card is required.

Anyone can try Cord for free, live, in production, with up to 5,000 monthly active users (MAUs).

The free tier includes two developer seats in the Cord Console, and one Cord Application (deployment) configuration.

You really don't charge per user? Why not?

An arrow pointing up

Most software applications have many dormant or churned users as well as active users. For performance, we encourage you to sync your users into Cord, but we don't want this to cost you. So, we don't charge based on the number of user records you create in Cord. Instead, we bill based on how many actively engaged users you have. See "What are MAUs?"

We do have a cap of users on our free Starter tier, with a more generous cap on the Pro tier. Furthermore, our Premium pricing is dependent on the amount of advanced, enterprise features you need and the scale of your business.

What are MAUs?

An arrow pointing up

"MAU" stands for Monthly Active Users. This means the number of users who were actively using Cord across the last month within your software.

We structure our billing this way so that you only pay for real usage of Cord within your software. We don't want you to pay per user account since many, many software applications have far more users in the database than they have logging in regularly. If you have 100,000 total users of your application, but only 10,000 of those users are active, you only need to pay for the 10,000.

For billing purposes, a user is "active" in a given month if they see or interact with any Cord components. This means sending or receiving messages, but also viewing existing conversations. It also includes seeing the presence of other users or checking notifications. If Cord components appear on a user's screen, that user is "active" for that month.

What happens when I go over my monthly active user limit?

An arrow pointing up

If there are more MAUs in a 30-day period than your user limit allows for, a member of the Cord team will reach out about moving to the next tier. Don't worry - in the meantime, Cord's collaborative features will continue working for your users for at least 14 days.

What are Cord projects?

An arrow pointing up

Each Cord project is its own secure, isolated space of users, threads, messages and configuration.

Each project comes with an API key you will use to embed Cord's components inside your product.

Companies often use projects to separate environments, like "staging", "testing", "production", and so on.

What are "seats"? Why do I need them? What if I need more?

An arrow pointing up

A "seat" is an account for a user from your team logging into the Cord Console. Team members like developers, PMs, designers and other people working on building the Cord integration inside your product will require user accounts on the Cord Console. They will use their account to access the Cord application configuration for development and monitoring use.

Most companies only need a handful, and if you are on the Pro tier and need more seats, contact us on sales@cord.com and we'll be happy to assist.

Do you have multi-year billing options?

An arrow pointing up

Absolutely, we’re happy to offer clients discounted multi-year contracts. Please contact us on sales@cord.com to learn more.

How does the Slack integration work?

An arrow pointing up

If you've enabled Cord's Slack integration, users collaborating inside your product will be able to connect to their Slack account. That way, they already have a name, photo, and can see who’s already using Cord. They’re also able to invite more members of their Slack workspace by typing @ followed by any teammate’s name, just as they would expect.

By connecting Cord and Slack, your product will become more of a hub for your users’ workflows. When a user is @mentioned in Cord, they’ll get a Slack message and can jump back into to your tool to continue the conversation in context. Users can easily share Cord conversations to Slack channels or private conversations — and they can reply in a Slack thread to have that message appear inside your product. You can learn more about Cord's Slack integration here.

Cord will never send a Slack message without permission from your users.

How can the Slack integration help grow my product?

An arrow pointing up

Cord’s Slack integration helps you acquire more users. When your users connect their profile to a Slack account, they can easily @mention and invite more people from their team.

When users share an annotated screenshot to Slack or @mention someone in your product, it gets more people involved in your product.

Can Cord help me understand how teams work together in my product?

An arrow pointing up

Cord can help you understand the full user journey beyond the actions your users take in your product.

By adding a collaborative layer to your product, you can understand your users’ team dynamics: who they report to, who do they need approval or feedback from, who are their stakeholders. This can inform your sales, customer support and product teams to offer a better user experience.

How hard is it to implement Cord?

An arrow pointing up

You can learn more about what it takes to implement Cord in our API docs, and look at some of our Open Source demo apps to get a head start. You’ll need to sign up to the Cord Console get an access token. Once you have that, this can take as little as a few hours, or up to a week for most applications.

Our Premium package includes a dedicated implementation manager, who will work with your engineering team to implement the collaboration experience.

How customizable is Cord?

An arrow pointing up

You can fully customize the look and feel of Cord’s collaboration components. You also control the messages that appear when users set up the collaboration, making sure it matches your brand’s voice and tone. You can adjust all of this in our developer console and using CSS and JavaScript.

How secure is Cord?

An arrow pointing up

We take your users’ security as seriously as you do. That’s why we have security-minded engineers from leading tech companies like Google, Facebook and Microsoft on our team. Our process is rigorous: we use industry-grade encryption and offer advanced security features based on your needs and product. For example, our Premium plan includes private S3 buckets and privacy-aware screenshots. Additionally, you are in control of where Cord appears inside your product, and can control access to messages this way.

Cord is SOC 2 Type II certified, goes through rigorous penetration testing regularly, and is trusted by multiple large, public companies and products used in sensitive industries. You can learn more about Cord's security policy here.
