How to get engineers to respond to your outreach

Ask engineers what makes them reply to a recruiter and they'll tell you at length: put the salary in, name the tech stack, be honest about remote, skip the template, don't waste their time. Good advice, worth following to the letter. It also has a ceiling that better wording can't lift, because the biggest factor in whether an engineer replies isn't how the message reads. It's whether they were open to hearing from you at all.

Write the message engineers actually ask for

The advice is consistent because it comes from the people you're messaging. Lead with the specifics, name the real stack and the actual problem rather than "exciting opportunity", reference something they genuinely built instead of "your profile stood out", keep it short, and end with something easy to say yes to. Do that and you'll beat most recruiters, who do none of it.

Then face the ceiling

Here's the part the templates skip. Most recruiter outreach lands somewhere around a 10 to 30% response rate, and that band holds even for well-written messages, because a cold message is a cold message however neat the wording. You can move within the band with better copy. You can't escape it with better copy.

We even checked the obvious lever. Comparing direct approaches on cord where the salary was shown against those where it was hidden, the reply rate barely moved, roughly 40% either way. The thing that changes the number isn't a detail in the message. It's whether the person had signalled they were open in the first place.

The part you can't wordsmith

Reach an engineer who has already said they're open to moving and a good message does what it was always meant to: around 40% of direct approaches on cord turn into a real conversation, against the 10 to 30% a cold channel tops out at. Same message, different odds, because the audience is different. Write it well, then send it somewhere it can actually land.
