Working with some of the top employers in the UK, in the last year their customer numbers have grown 350%, providing financial coaching to the employees of household names like Sony, Moneysupermarket and Octopus Energy. With the Octopus Group backing them, they’re now poised to expand the service and team rapidly.
Our Goal
We started from scratch at Octopus MoneyCoach - our goal as hiring managers was to build out the Product and Engineering function from the very first few hires. We needed a tool that could facilitate the scale we needed in our hiring pipeline.
Our Situation
Control from the outset
Previously we’d tried recruitment agencies and sourcing via Linkedin, but both of those processes shared the same problem, we were quite far removed from the Engineers we were trying to hire. We needed a tool that would give us more control in the sourcing process, while also giving us the volume that we needed to accomplish our scaling goals.
I’d previously used cord and knew the value it could provide, so we implemented using cord from the very start of our journey at Octopus.

Active, quality Engineers
cord is different because you’re able to directly communicate with Engineers that are actively looking for work - both parties, ourselves and the candidate, are in a much better place to be responsive if we both have the same goal in mind. The direct communication works both ways, we can reach out to Engineers who we think are a good fit and they can speak to us directly too. On top of this, Engineers that reach out to us directly on cord are of a higher quality than we get from other sources. The ease of starting a conversation means the overall process of getting someone into our pipeline is much faster, and with quality people reaching out to us, it saves us the time we’d spend finding and reaching out to them too.
Tools for success
On cord we’re able to set up streams for each of our different open positions, being able to edit and filter exactly who we want to appear depending on our requirements. Using the filters I can make sure that the people I’m notified about are a match on primary and secondary technical skills, salary, location and remote working preferences. The extra information that exists as part of Engineers profiles allow us to make an informed decision about whether they’d be a good fit for us, while reducing the amount of information we have to gather on an initial screening call. Once we’ve decided we want to message someone, we can send a personalised message template including a calendar invite for booking a call, in just a few clicks.
Greater efficiency
Our first hire on cord was 13 days from initial message to offer, with the quickest time to hire being 7 days. Out of the 167 people we’ve sourced, we’ve made 11 offers which resulted in 9 hires. Compared to Linkedin where we might message 100 people and get 5 replies, the quality and efficiency we get from cord is great. cord’s pricing means that we’ve been able to use it for 14 months at the same cost as 2 recruitment agency hires, so it’s much better from a cost-per-hire perspective.
