Our Situation
Untenable alternatives
We tried using job boards in the past, but I found if you post on a job board and do nothing else you get very little traction. On the other hand, LinkedIn wasn’t a tenable alternative for us, mainly because of the difficulty of finding and filtering Engineers based on their technical skills. Although some individuals claim to be familiar with certain technologies, such as React or Serverless, it is hard to determine the extent of their proficiency. I often found I only knew about an Engineer’s familiarity with a specific tech stack if I knew which tech stack their current company uses. It was simply too time-consuming and impractical to use LinkedIn for our hiring needs.

Salary insights
On a day-to-day basis, I review new Engineers that enter my streams while responding to any incoming messages and continue conversations with prospective hires to schedule interviews. I also set up email and Slack notifications to alert me when someone new enters my streams, making the sourcing process much more efficient as it’s like these Engineers are coming to ME - I don’t have to go and search for them. What’s more, these profiles are fresh and come from Engineers who are actively seeking a role change. I know that by reaching out to them, I am contacting someone who is engaged and not passive, which improves response rates and the speed of responses. With cord’s direct messaging capabilities, it is easy to get in touch with active Engineers, and around 75% of the Engineers I reach out to get back to me. This marked an improvement over LinkedIn and other tools I was using, making for a more effective recruitment process.
Transparency and quality
I have found that on other platforms, such as LinkedIn, job seekers are tailoring their skillset and CV to match our company's needs. Whereas on cord, Engineers list their primary and secondary skills on their profiles first. By providing this information upfront, Engineers on cord make the hiring process more efficient and straightforward as I can easily find Engineers with the relevant skill sets. The profiles themselves provide me with just the right amount of data I need to quickly make a judgement on who is worth taking further into the hiring pipeline. Not only are primary and secondary skills visible on an Engineer’s profile, but information such as expected salary, remote preference and past work experience are all clearly visible. This level of transparency reassures me that I’m only contacting quality Engineers who are relevant to my hiring needs.
Salary insights
As the co-founder of a start-up company, I was initially in the dark about the current market salaries and how to set the right compensation for my positions. Fortunately, cord provided us with a lot of reporting on salaries, and their Salary Benchmarking Tool was particularly helpful. It enabled us to get up to speed on the current market rates and helped us calibrate our compensation packages to attract the talent we required. When I tried before to gather all that information myself it was not an easy task, so I’m grateful that cord made it accessible to us. With the insights provided by cord, we were able to make informed decisions on our compensation packages.
