Average developer salaries

This article focuses on remote working in Europe and seeks to compare the salaries that developers of different seniorities, and using different popular technologies, earn in the countries in which cord is most widely-used.

These countries are:

  • Belgium
  • France
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Poland
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • UK (remote)

Average salaries of senior developers by country

Graph showing average salaries of senior level developers and average developer position salaries in 10 European countries

At senior level, Swiss developers earn the highest salaries, with Ireland, Poland and Germany seeing the next highest salary expectations.

Belgium is the only country in which the average salaries associated with senior developer positions exceed the average expectations of senior developers in that country. Senior developer positions based in Italy have the lowest average salaries associated with them of all countries.

Average salaries of mid-level developers by country

Graph showing average salaries of mid level developers and average developer position salaries in 10 European countries

At mid level, Swiss developers earn the highest salaries, while Spanish developers earn the lowest.

Average salaries offered by companies based in Switzerland, Belgium, the UK and Spain for mid-level positions exceed (although, in the latter two cases, narrowly) average salary expectations of mid-level developers based in these countries.

Average salary expectations by primary skill

The following graphs show the five most popular development-related primary skills in each country, and the average salary expectations of developers listing these skills on their cord profiles.

Belgium

Spring Boot, Java, Angular, Typescript and React are the most popular development skills in Belgium. Of these, Spring Boot commands the highest salary, while React has the lowest average salary associated with developers who know it.

France

Node.js, React, Java, Angular and Python are the five most popular development skills in France. Developers who know Node.js earn an average salary of €72,160.

Germany

The most popular development skills in Germany are Typescript, React, Node.js, Java and Python. Typescript developers based in Germany earn €89,500 on average.

Ireland

Java, .NET, Python, React and Angular are the most popular skills among developers based in Ireland, with Java developers earning the highest average salaries at €85,633.

Italy

The five most popular development skills in Poland are React, Java, Typescript, Javascript and Python. React developers based in Poland typically earn €86,435, compared with €79,904 for Python developers in the country.

Spain

Java, Angular, Node.js, React and Python are the five most popular development skills in Spain. Of these, developers who know Java earn the highest salaries, at €61,154 on average.

Sweden

Switzerland

Graph showing Average salary on Y axis and Python, React, Node.js, Typescript and Vue.js on X axis

The most popular development skills in Switzerland are Python, React, Node.js, Typescript and Vue.js. Unlike many of the other countries in which it is among the five most popular skills, Swiss-based Python developers typically out-earn developers using the other four most popular skills in the country, with an average salary of €95,764. Vue.js, the lowest-paid of Switerland's five most popular development skills, sees a sharp drop-off from the fourth-highest paid of these skills, Typescript, with average salaries of €80,509 and €91,611 respectively.

Key Insights

  • Senior developers based in Switzerland earn the highest salaries, while those based in Italy earn the lowest
  • At mid level, developer salaries are again highest in Switzerland, but lowest in Spain
  • In countries where it is among the 5 most popular development skills, Python typically sees the lowest salaries of these, except in Switzerland where it correlates with the highest salaries of the country's five most popular development skills.
