How can I identify the activities that suit me best?
I started doing something recommended by Tim Ferris, called a ‘past year review’ at the end of each year. So instead of setting New Year's resolutions, which are doomed almost from the start, what he advocates doing is going through your calendar and actually your photo reel on your phone. Because they're now all organized by date, and just go through those. And just week by week, for each week of the year, just note down anything that gave you particularly strong and positive energy and things that you found really draining on your energy. And just think about it as, I came out of that week buzzing, or I came out of that activity or that day buzzing. And oh, this thing was like... That week really took it out of me. And just write it down at the end of each year.
And then just go through that list. You can probably fit it on one piece of paper and just look at the things in there and just be like, what are the commonalities between the things that really gave me a lot of energy and what are the commonalities between the things that really drained it? And that will probably tell you a lot about yourself, that just looking at these really basic things can really help you in understanding yourself. And then from there, I think it's much easier to get to, "Okay, what do I want to be doing? I want to be doing more of this and less of this. And what does that now look like from the kind of work I want to be doing?"
