Job Description

The SOC Analyst executes continuous security monitoring, initial incident triage, and evidence collection to support senior analysts and incident commanders.

Our initial engagement involves a key client in the business aviation sector. Success requires maintaining vigilant surveillance for threats while recognising when escalations are needed, ensuring flight operations continue without unnecessary security interruptions.

Good performance in this role means demonstrating diligence in alert triage, accurate documentation, and clear communication. You understand that enterprise frameworks often contain redundant layers unsuitable for lean, agile in-house teams. You can distinguish between effective necessity and administrative overhead.

Team members operate without single points of failure. Each person has enough breadth to support adjacent domains when needed. Knowledge is shared openly rather than siloed. Handovers are precise and documented. Trust is built across distances through clear communication and consistent delivery.

Success is measured by reliable detection coverage, timely escalation of genuine threats, and investigations that remain thorough even in air-gapped or degraded connectivity conditions.

These are not entry-level roles requiring constant supervision. We need motivated individuals who can think critically within defined frameworks, operate with moderate independence, and commit to developing deeper analytical capability over time.

We seek practitioners who understand that security is a discipline of judgement, not just procedure execution. If you expect every scenario to fit a playbook without exception, this position will frustrate you. If you view frameworks as starting points for learning rather than rigid prescriptions, you will thrive here.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor assigned alert streams and perform initial triage following established playbooks
  • Execute follow-the-sun handovers with complete documentation for subsequent shifts
  • Collect and preserve forensic evidence according to incident response procedures
  • Escalate anomalies and complex investigations to senior analysts or incident commanders
  • Update runbooks and knowledge bases with lessons learned from investigated incidents
  • Perform routine health checks on monitoring infrastructure and report abnormalities
  • Support penetration testing observations and breach monitoring as directed
  • Maintain accuracy in alert classification to reduce false positive noise
  • Escalate complex cases with complete documentation that enables senior analysts to continue investigations seamlessly

Requirements

  • Foundational grounding in digital forensics and incident analysis
  • Experience working with security monitoring tools in supervised settings
  • Working knowledge of SIEM platforms and log analysis fundamentals
  • Willingness to learn frameworks and improve interpretation over time
  • Experience in security monitoring or SOC environments
  • Demonstrated ability to accept feedback and improve performance

Process Discipline: You understand the purpose of established procedures and apply them consistently. You follow the available evidence, record your actions clearly and avoid skipping steps simply because a task appears familiar.

Developing Judgement: You can distinguish routine activity from potential risk within your area of responsibility. When the evidence is incomplete, the situation is unusual or the decision exceeds your authority, you pause and escalate rather than guess.

Evidence-Based Thinking: You approach alerts and investigations with curiosity and structure. You ask what happened, what evidence supports that conclusion, what remains unknown and what should happen next.

Emerging Threat Awareness: You keep informed about relevant emerging threats, attack techniques and vulnerabilities. You seek to understand how they could affect the organisation, apply new information to your day-to-day work and raise potentially relevant risks with more experienced analysts.

Foundational Technical Understanding: You understand the basic operation of the systems monitored by the SOC and can recognise when activity is abnormal or when deeper investigation is required. You are building knowledge across endpoints, networks, identity, cloud services and security tooling.

Reliable Execution: You complete assigned work accurately and within agreed timeframes. You manage queues responsibly, maintain attention to detail during repetitive tasks and raise blockers early enough for the team to respond.

Clear Communication: You write concise, factual notes that allow another analyst to understand what happened and continue the work without repeating the investigation. You provide accurate handovers and avoid overstating conclusions.

Learning Through Practice: You actively develop your technical and investigative skills through hands-on experience, feedback, documentation and targeted study. You apply new knowledge to the work in front of you rather than treating learning as separate from operations.

Team Coverage: You are willing to learn about adjacent technologies and assist outside your preferred area when team continuity requires it. You understand that broad awareness makes you more effective while your deeper expertise continues to develop.

Coachability: You welcome feedback from senior analysts and the SOC Manager, apply it consistently and demonstrate progress over time. You document lessons learnt and use them to improve future decisions.

Global Collaboration: You work effectively in a distributed team. You communicate reliably across time zones, keep work visible and build trust by doing what you say you will do.

Discretion: To the outside world, including friends and family in casual settings, you "work in IT". You do not discuss who the organisation serves, what it secures or the specifics of its work. Your professional reputation is protected by disciplined confidentiality.

Within the first thirty days:

  • Achieve proficiency in operating model and handover protocols
  • Complete training on current monitoring tools and alert classification against industry standards
  • Begin contributing to internal knowledge repositories with documented findings
  • Establish working relationship with SOC Manager to understand escalation criteria and feedback cycles

Within sixty days:

  • Contribute to the aviation sector proof of concept by monitoring assigned alert streams and escalating anomalies
  • Ensure accurate documentation of all investigated events for shift handover
  • Assist in consolidating alert streams into managed dashboards under senior analyst direction
  • Validate routine security checks do not impede operational safety
  • Achieve consistent performance on standard triage procedures with zero missed escalations

Beyond ninety days:

  • Refine personal proficiency based on feedback from the aviation proof of concept and SOC Manage
  • Begin supporting expanded monitoring coverage for additional business units
  • Participate in workshops with client IT leads to understand incident escalation pathways
  • Contribute to threat hunting activities under supervision
  • Continue developing skills against emerging adversary TTPs with demonstrated improvement

  • Private healthcare
  • Generous pension

Job Description

Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking! Our vision is fast technology, fair service, and honest values. All at the tap of a phone, all the time.

Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking! We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way.

We’re a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We’re a bank, but better: fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone. We employ more than 3,000 people across our London, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester offices.

Our technologists are at the very heart of Starling and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment that is all about building things, creating new stuff, and disruptive technology that keeps us on the cutting edge of fintech. We operate a flat structure to empower you to make decisions regardless of what your primary responsibilities may be, innovation and collaboration will be at the core of everything you do. Help is never far away in our open culture, you will find support in your team and from across the business, we are in this together!

The way to thrive and shine within Starling is to be a self-driven individual and be able to take full ownership of everything around you: From building things, designing, discovering, to sharing knowledge with your colleagues and making sure all processes are efficient and productive to deliver the best possible results for our customers. Our purpose is underpinned by five Starling values: Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim For Greatness.

Hybrid Working

We have a Hybrid approach to working here at Starling - our preference is that you're located within a commutable distance of one of our offices so that we're able to interact and collaborate in person. We don't like to mandate how much you visit the office and work from home, that's to be agreed upon between you and your manager.

Our Data Environment

Our Data teams are excited about the value of data within the business, powers our product decisions to improve things for our customers and enhance effective and agile decision making, regardless of what their primary tech stack may be. Hear from the team in our latest blogs or our case studies with Women in Tech.

We are looking for talented data professionals at all levels to join the team. We value people being engaged and caring about customers, caring about the code they write and the contribution they make to Starling. People with a broad ability to apply themselves to a multitude of problems and challenges, who can work across teams do great things here at Starling, to continue changing banking for good.

Requirements

We have built our entire banking platform in house and mostly in Java. We are looking for people who want to work on building the tooling that is used by our engineers on a daily basis.

We are looking for people who are truly full stack, and are as comfortable polishing their javascript front end as they are debugging the innards of their java applications database interactions, or standing up infrastructure with terraform. We are looking for people who can:

  • Design REST apis.
  • Code backend services, ideally using Java, or another other server side compiled language.
  • Develop modern front ends, ideally using React and Redux.
  • Get their code into the cloud and support it there, ideally on AWS.
  • Believe in clean coding, simple solutions, automated testing and continuous deployment.
  • Like to take ownership of a feature from the original idea through to live.
  • Think (like us) that a small number of empowered developers is the right way to deliver software.

Company Benefits

  • 33 days holiday (including flexible bank holidays)
  • An extra day’s holiday for your birthday
  • 16 hours paid volunteering time a year
  • Part-time and/or flexible hours available for most roles
  • Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme
  • Life insurance at 4x your salary
  • Hybrid/remote working
  • Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton
  • Generous family-friendly policies
  • Varied social groups set up and run by our employees
  • Perkbox membership giving access to retail discounts, a wellness platform for physical and mental health, and weekly free and boosted perks
  • Access to initiatives like Cycle to Work, Salary Sacrificed Gym partnerships and Electric Vehicle (EV) leasing

Full details are available on our careers site

Interview Process

Interviewing is a two way process and we want you to have the time and opportunity to get to know us, as much as we are getting to know you! Our interviews are conversational and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious. In general you can expect the below, following a chat with one of our Talent Team:

  • Stage 1 - 30 mins with one of the team
  • Stage 2 - Take home challenge
  • Stage 3 - 90 mins technical interview with two team members
  • Stage 3 - 45 min final with an executive and a member of the people team
