Job Description

We are seeking an exceptional Director of Marketing and Communications to lead the strategic positioning and brand narrative of MediaCity ensuring that our story resonates with diverse audiences and supports our ambitious growth objectives.

This is not a traditional marketing and communications leadership role.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will shape and deliver the brand vision and narrative for MediaCity, driving awareness and engagement across a unique ecosystem of real estate, production facilities, creative services, partnerships, events, destination experiences and community initiatives.

This is a rare opportunity to shape and grow the MediaCity brand as one of Europe's leading creative, media and technology destinations. Bringing together world-class studios, post-production, music recording, creative services and a vibrant business community, the role will define a compelling market position, build national influence and create a brand platform with global reach.

What You'll Deliver

Create the Brand Strategy

  • Define and implement a cohesive marketing and communications strategy that elevates the MediaCity brand, aligning with the vision and overarching business goals.
  • Ensure consistent brand messaging and identity across all platforms and touchpoints, supporting all marketing and campaign efforts.

Drive Integrated Campaigns

  • Lead the planning and execution of impactful marketing campaigns across digital, traditional, and experiential channels, including those specifically designed to promote opportunities within emerging creative sectors (e.g., television, film, audio, digital content).
  • Attract businesses, residents, visitors and talent to both destinations, and drive engagement with new offerings in creative sectors through targeted campaigns.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure campaigns support specific commercial and community objectives.

Shape Content & Storytelling

  • Champion compelling content creation that showcases MediaCity's unique, globally significant offerings, successes and community spirit, ensuring it resonates effectively with diverse target audiences.
  • Direct the development of marketing collateral, digital assets and editorial content across various global and local platforms, consistently supporting the overarching brand narrative and identity.

Build Strategic Partnerships

  • Cultivate and maintain influential relationships with a diverse range of key stakeholders, including media, creative industries, technology, investment, public sector, culture, tenants and the wider community.
  • Act as a senior ambassador for MediaCity and Landsec in the North, representing them at industry events and forums.

Enhance Communications & PR

  • Oversee all external and internal communications, including media relations and public relations.
  • Manage stakeholder engagement and crisis communications to protect and enhance reputation.

What We're Looking For

We're less interested in where you've worked and more interested in what you've built.

You may come from media, production, creative industries, regeneration, real estate, hospitality, technology or another commercially complex sector.

What matters is your ability to:

  • Create and execute ambitious brand and communication strategies.
  • Lead integrated marketing campaigns that deliver measurable results.
  • Build and maintain influential relationships with media and senior stakeholders to drive change.
  • Translate complex visions into compelling narratives.
  • Identify opportunities others don't see.
  • Lead high-performing teams and foster creative talent.
  • Most importantly, you'll bring entrepreneurial thinking, curiosity and a passion for building exceptional places, businesses and experiences.

The Director of Marketing and Communications is accountable for developing and delivering MediaCity's strategic marketing and communications vision. This role will drive brand awareness, reputation, and engagement across all audiences, supporting the commercial and community objectives and long-term value creation across one of the UK's most ambitious destinations.

Reporting to the Chief Executive of MediaCity and sitting on the Senior Leadership Team, the role will lead the integration of marketing, communications and campaigns across workspace, production facilities, creative services, destination experiences and partnerships.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future growth of MediaCity - accelerating its position as a leading creative and production ecosystem.

This role offers a rare opportunity to influence the brand future of a nationally important asset with the backing of Landsec and the freedom to shape new markets, partnerships and revenue streams.

Key Accountabilities

Strategic Brand Leadership:

  • Develop and articulate a compelling brand vision and strategy for MediaCity, ensuring differentiation and market relevance.
  • Lead the strategic positioning of MediaCity across all platforms and touchpoints.
  • Ensure brand guidelines are consistently applied and evolved to reflect growth.

Integrated Marketing & Campaigns:

  • Oversee the development and execution of multi-channel marketing campaigns (digital, social, experiential, print) to drive enquiries, footfall and engagement.
  • Collaborate closely with the Commercial, Place & Community and Creative Production teams to support their specific marketing needs and objectives.
  • Use data and insights to optimise campaign performance and ROI.

Content Strategy & Creation:

  • Define the content strategy, ensuring a consistent flow of high-quality engaging content that tells the story of MediaCity.
  • Direct the creation of marketing collateral, digital assets and editorial content.

Stakeholder Engagement & Strategic Partnerships:

  • Develop and implement a robust stakeholder communications plan, engaging with occupiers, partners, local government and community groups.
  • Act as a senior ambassador for MediaCity and Landsec in the North.

Communications & Public Relations:

  • Manage all proactive and reactive media relations, ensuring positive coverage and effective crisis management.
  • Proactively monitor and manage the reputation of both destinations, addressing issues promptly and effectively.

Inspire High-Performing Teams

  • Act as a visible leader and influential member of the Senior Leadership.
  • Lead and develop a diverse team creating a culture of ambition, accountability and collaboration.
  • Build future capability through talent development and succession planning.
  • Champion inclusion, innovation and continuous learning.

Key Skills Required

  • Strategic Marketing & Communications: Proven ability to develop and execute comprehensive brand, marketing and communications strategies for complex, multi-faceted destinations or organisations.
  • Leadership & Influence: Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to inspire and manage diverse teams, influence senior stakeholders and drive cross-functional collaboration.
  • Brand Storytelling: Demonstrated expertise in crafting compelling narratives and managing brand identity across various channels and audiences.
  • Digital & Commercial Acumen: Strong business acumen and understanding of market drivers, coupled with a deep understanding of digital marketing trends, analytics and tools. Proven ability to leverage digital strategies to drive engagement, measure performance and balance relationships with exceptional commercial outcomes.
  • Leadership & Communication: Ability to lead teams and manage stakeholder relationships impeccably, coupled with excellent communications skills.

Job Description

Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking! Our vision is fast technology, fair service, and honest values. All at the tap of a phone, all the time.

Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking! We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way.

We’re a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We’re a bank, but better: fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone. We employ more than 3,000 people across our London, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester offices.

Our technologists are at the very heart of Starling and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment that is all about building things, creating new stuff, and disruptive technology that keeps us on the cutting edge of fintech. We operate a flat structure to empower you to make decisions regardless of what your primary responsibilities may be, innovation and collaboration will be at the core of everything you do. Help is never far away in our open culture, you will find support in your team and from across the business, we are in this together!

The way to thrive and shine within Starling is to be a self-driven individual and be able to take full ownership of everything around you: From building things, designing, discovering, to sharing knowledge with your colleagues and making sure all processes are efficient and productive to deliver the best possible results for our customers. Our purpose is underpinned by five Starling values: Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim For Greatness.

Hybrid Working

We have a Hybrid approach to working here at Starling - our preference is that you're located within a commutable distance of one of our offices so that we're able to interact and collaborate in person. We don't like to mandate how much you visit the office and work from home, that's to be agreed upon between you and your manager.

Our Data Environment

Our Data teams are excited about the value of data within the business, powers our product decisions to improve things for our customers and enhance effective and agile decision making, regardless of what their primary tech stack may be. Hear from the team in our latest blogs or our case studies with Women in Tech.

We are looking for talented data professionals at all levels to join the team. We value people being engaged and caring about customers, caring about the code they write and the contribution they make to Starling. People with a broad ability to apply themselves to a multitude of problems and challenges, who can work across teams do great things here at Starling, to continue changing banking for good.

Requirements

We have built our entire banking platform in house and mostly in Java. We are looking for people who want to work on building the tooling that is used by our engineers on a daily basis.

We are looking for people who are truly full stack, and are as comfortable polishing their javascript front end as they are debugging the innards of their java applications database interactions, or standing up infrastructure with terraform. We are looking for people who can:

  • Design REST apis.
  • Code backend services, ideally using Java, or another other server side compiled language.
  • Develop modern front ends, ideally using React and Redux.
  • Get their code into the cloud and support it there, ideally on AWS.
  • Believe in clean coding, simple solutions, automated testing and continuous deployment.
  • Like to take ownership of a feature from the original idea through to live.
  • Think (like us) that a small number of empowered developers is the right way to deliver software.

Company Benefits

  • 33 days holiday (including flexible bank holidays)
  • An extra day’s holiday for your birthday
  • 16 hours paid volunteering time a year
  • Part-time and/or flexible hours available for most roles
  • Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme
  • Life insurance at 4x your salary
  • Hybrid/remote working
  • Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton
  • Generous family-friendly policies
  • Varied social groups set up and run by our employees
  • Perkbox membership giving access to retail discounts, a wellness platform for physical and mental health, and weekly free and boosted perks
  • Access to initiatives like Cycle to Work, Salary Sacrificed Gym partnerships and Electric Vehicle (EV) leasing

Full details are available on our careers site

Interview Process

Interviewing is a two way process and we want you to have the time and opportunity to get to know us, as much as we are getting to know you! Our interviews are conversational and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious. In general you can expect the below, following a chat with one of our Talent Team:

  • Stage 1 - 30 mins with one of the team
  • Stage 2 - Take home challenge
  • Stage 3 - 90 mins technical interview with two team members
  • Stage 3 - 45 min final with an executive and a member of the people team
