Job Description

Location: London (Paddington)

Vega treats in-person collaboration as a competitive advantage, with the team in-office a minimum of 4x days per week

About Vega

Vega is transforming the way private markets operate. Alternative asset management is one of the most influential forces in the global economy, with over $20TN in assets today. Over the next five years, the industry is set to grow 3x, but GPs are facing challenges around their ability to handle the investment flows that are coming in. GPs have been completely underserved by innovation, particularly on the investor relations side.

Vega built the industry’s first AI-native operating system, where all client work gets done - from the start of an investor’s journey to its end. We are rethinking how work gets done in private markets from first principles: the opportunity is big, but it’s also niche, high-stakes, and difficult to get right.

Who we are

We are still at the beginning of our journey. Vega was founded by former investors at Elliott and KKR, and built by talent from the world’s leading technology and financial services firms - including Trade Republic, Revolut, Goldman Sachs, BCG, and more. We have raised $30M so far, with the backing of Apollo, Motive Partners, and 60+ senior executives from the industry. Today, we have over $300B AUM and 30,000 users on the platform, and we have much more left to do.

How we do it

Vega is a fast-growing startup. We want to make this a career-accelerating place for people with the ambition to build something big. If the below sounds appealing, it could be for you:

  1. We do not seek consensus. You will be expected to voice opinions and take initiative. Vega's best people do not wait to be told what to do before finding solutions to problems they have spotted.

  2. We believe bureaucracy is the killer of progress. We are focused on creating the minimum viable process to operate with quality at speed.

  3. We prioritise talent over tenure. There is no promise of progression without performance – we assess and reward people on impact above all else.

  4. We iterate fast. We make decisions amid ambiguity and with imperfect information, and we strive to balance committing to a hypothesis with iterating at low ego.

  5. We play to win. Expectations, intensity and ambition are very high, with every single colleague contributing to Vega's success. This often will not be a 9-5.

We know that this culture won’t be for everyone, and we endeavour to make this clear from the beginning of the recruiting process out of respect for your time. Ask yourself whether the above sounds exciting to you in practice every day, and if it does, we would love to hear from you.

The role

Vega runs a private markets platform used by fund sponsors and their investors. Everything our product teams ship - LP and GP portals, fund administration, co-invest, integrations — runs on infrastructure our Platform team builds and operates.

We're looking for a Platform Engineering Lead to run that team: someone who is still deep in the tooling day to day, but who also sets the direction for where our platform goes next and what good engineering looks like across the company.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll spend a meaningful part of your week in Terraform, Kubernetes manifests and pipelines, and the rest setting direction, unblocking the team, and working with the wider business on what we build next.

You'll report to the Head of Engineering and lead the Platform team, working alongside the leads of our product-facing teams. The platform's direction is yours to own. Beyond that, you'll be expected to have a view on where Vega's engineering is heading as a whole and to argue for it — decisions we make better when there's a strong platform voice in the room.

What you'll own

  • AWS— networking, security, identity and access, CDN, and our infrastructure-as-code estate (OpenTofu)

  • Kubernetes (EKS)— reliable, secure, cost-sensible hosting for our application services

  • Data infrastructure— PostgreSQL: availability, performance, backup and recovery, schema operations at scale

  • Observability— Grafana and the wider telemetry stack; making the platform legible to the engineers who use it

  • Developer experience— CI/CD pipelines, build runners,Harness.io; the paved road from commit to production

  • Internal tooling— Metabase, Retool and the systems the rest of the business runs on

  • Prototyping and AI enablement— the environments, guardrails and patterns that let teams across Vega build and ship new things quickly without cutting corners on security

What you'll do

Build and operate. You'll be in the codebase and the console. Writing Terraform, tuning clusters, improving pipelines, debugging the thing nobody else can. The team should see you shipping alongside them, not reviewing from a distance.

Set the technical direction. Own the platform roadmap outright: what we consolidate, what we retire, what we invest in, and what we deliberately leave alone. Bring a point of view on reliability targets, cost, security posture and where the infrastructure needs to be in twelve months to support the product we'll be selling then. You'll agree priorities with the Head of Engineering, but the plan should be yours.

Lead the team. Set priorities, run the work, grow the engineers. Handle the standard leadership craft — one-to-ones, feedback, performance, hiring — and set a bar for quality that holds when you're not in the room.

Treat platform as a product. Our customers are Vega's engineers and, increasingly, people outside engineering. Understand where they lose time, measure it, and remove it. Golden paths and sensible defaults beat documentation and tickets.

Own security and compliance in practice. Access control, secrets, network boundaries, audit evidence. We operate under SOC 2 and handle sensitive investor data; you'll make the compliant path the easy path rather than a separate chore.

Enable the AI-era way of working. We're moving towards small cross-functional teams using spec-driven development with AI agents doing a large share of the build. That only works if the environments, guardrails and deployment paths underneath are strong. You'll shape what "fast and safe" looks like here — sandboxes, autonomy boundaries, production readiness criteria, and the tooling that makes them real.

Represent the platform outside engineering. Explain trade-offs, cost and risk to people who don't work in infrastructure, and bring their constraints back into your roadmap.

What this role is not

  • A pure people-management role — if you want to stop building, this isn't it

  • An architecture role detached from delivery — you'll own the outcome, not just the diagram

  • A ticket queue — the platform team sets its own agenda in service of the business, and you'll shape that agenda

  • A role where the plan arrives fully formed — you'll be asked what we should be doing, not just how fast you can do it

Why join us?

  • You will help define the transformation of one of the most influential industries of our time with AI, working alongside an ambitious and dedicated team

  • Competitive salary and equity package

  • Benefits including medical insurance, gym membership, learning budget, and more

Job Description

Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking! Our vision is fast technology, fair service, and honest values. All at the tap of a phone, all the time.

Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking! We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way.

We’re a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We’re a bank, but better: fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone. We employ more than 3,000 people across our London, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester offices.

Our technologists are at the very heart of Starling and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment that is all about building things, creating new stuff, and disruptive technology that keeps us on the cutting edge of fintech. We operate a flat structure to empower you to make decisions regardless of what your primary responsibilities may be, innovation and collaboration will be at the core of everything you do. Help is never far away in our open culture, you will find support in your team and from across the business, we are in this together!

The way to thrive and shine within Starling is to be a self-driven individual and be able to take full ownership of everything around you: From building things, designing, discovering, to sharing knowledge with your colleagues and making sure all processes are efficient and productive to deliver the best possible results for our customers. Our purpose is underpinned by five Starling values: Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim For Greatness.

Hybrid Working

We have a Hybrid approach to working here at Starling - our preference is that you're located within a commutable distance of one of our offices so that we're able to interact and collaborate in person. We don't like to mandate how much you visit the office and work from home, that's to be agreed upon between you and your manager.

Our Data Environment

Our Data teams are excited about the value of data within the business, powers our product decisions to improve things for our customers and enhance effective and agile decision making, regardless of what their primary tech stack may be. Hear from the team in our latest blogs or our case studies with Women in Tech.

We are looking for talented data professionals at all levels to join the team. We value people being engaged and caring about customers, caring about the code they write and the contribution they make to Starling. People with a broad ability to apply themselves to a multitude of problems and challenges, who can work across teams do great things here at Starling, to continue changing banking for good.

Requirements

We have built our entire banking platform in house and mostly in Java. We are looking for people who want to work on building the tooling that is used by our engineers on a daily basis.

We are looking for people who are truly full stack, and are as comfortable polishing their javascript front end as they are debugging the innards of their java applications database interactions, or standing up infrastructure with terraform. We are looking for people who can:

  • Design REST apis.
  • Code backend services, ideally using Java, or another other server side compiled language.
  • Develop modern front ends, ideally using React and Redux.
  • Get their code into the cloud and support it there, ideally on AWS.
  • Believe in clean coding, simple solutions, automated testing and continuous deployment.
  • Like to take ownership of a feature from the original idea through to live.
  • Think (like us) that a small number of empowered developers is the right way to deliver software.

Company Benefits

  • 33 days holiday (including flexible bank holidays)
  • An extra day’s holiday for your birthday
  • 16 hours paid volunteering time a year
  • Part-time and/or flexible hours available for most roles
  • Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme
  • Life insurance at 4x your salary
  • Hybrid/remote working
  • Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton
  • Generous family-friendly policies
  • Varied social groups set up and run by our employees
  • Perkbox membership giving access to retail discounts, a wellness platform for physical and mental health, and weekly free and boosted perks
  • Access to initiatives like Cycle to Work, Salary Sacrificed Gym partnerships and Electric Vehicle (EV) leasing

Full details are available on our careers site

Interview Process

Interviewing is a two way process and we want you to have the time and opportunity to get to know us, as much as we are getting to know you! Our interviews are conversational and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious. In general you can expect the below, following a chat with one of our Talent Team:

  • Stage 1 - 30 mins with one of the team
  • Stage 2 - Take home challenge
  • Stage 3 - 90 mins technical interview with two team members
  • Stage 3 - 45 min final with an executive and a member of the people team
