Job Description

We're looking for a Technical Lead to join our fully remote team and take ownership of how the Xtract platform gets built. Over the past nine years, we've built a unique product that is transforming motor claims and incident management with connected vehicle data. Our customers are some of the largest insurance and vehicle leasing brands in the world, namely AXA, Allianz and AVIS Budget Group. Around half of all Irish motor claims now run through our platform.

We're passionate about our product, how it looks, how it works, and the unique first mover position we hold in the industry.

Reporting to our Head of Engineering, you'll do more than lead a squad. You'll be the second technical voice in the business: owning significant areas of the platform end to end, setting the standard for how work is designed, reviewed and released, and building the capability of the engineers around you. Where our Head of Engineering is in the detail today, you'll take that on, so the team can move at pace without depending on any one person.

This is a hands-on role. You'll still write code, still review it, and still be close enough to production to diagnose a problem yourself. But you'll be measured on what the team delivers, not on what you personally build.

At Xtract, innovation is at the heart of our culture. We'd love to hear from candidates excited about how AI could sharpen engineering, whether through code review, test generation, or making better sense of the sensor data at the core of our product.

This is a rare opportunity to take real technical ownership of an industry-leading platform, shape how a growing company builds, and step up as the business scales. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a group of engineers day to day, from breaking work down and estimating honestly through to delivering what was committed.
  • Own named areas of the platform end to end, from design through to production support.
  • Make significant design decisions within the technical direction set by the Head of Engineering, and write down the reasoning so others can follow it.
  • Hold the code review bar on correctness, security and maintainability, with feedback that explains why and not just what.
  • Raise the technical capability of the team through mentoring, pairing and shared ownership, so knowledge spreads rather than concentrates.
  • Bring engineering reality into roadmap conversations before commitments are made externally, not after.
  • Improve the performance, maintainability and security of the platform, and how quickly a production issue can be diagnosed and resolved.
  • Work with QA and operations so that what ships is reliable, and what breaks gets root-caused rather than patched.
  • Deputise for the Head of Engineering when needed, and be ready to step up as the team grows.

What You'll Need

  • Substantial experience building and running production backend systems in Node and TypeScript.
  • Experience leading a team, even a small one. You've been the person others come to, and you've made someone else measurably better at their job.
  • A strong grasp of event-driven and asynchronous architecture, and the failure modes that come with high volume data ingestion.
  • Comfortable owning infrastructure as well as application code on a major cloud platform. We run on Google Cloud with Terraform.
  • Able to make a design decision, write down the reasoning, and defend it when it gets challenged.
  • A real sense of ownership. You see something broken and you fix it, rather than logging it and moving on.
  • Excellent written communication. We're remote and across time zones, so blockers and risks get stated rather than assumed to be visible.
  • Enough React to review frontend work and be useful when the team needs it.
  • Bonus: Experience in a regulated or security-audited environment. We hold SOC 2 Type II and handle insurer data.
  • Bonus: Telematics, geospatial, or any domain where you've had to make sense of messy sensor data at volume.
  • Bonus: Knowledge of the mobility, insurance, telematics or fleet technology sectors.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and share options.
  • A fully remote team with real autonomy.
  • Direct access to the CEO and leadership team, and genuine influence over technical direction.
  • Real technical ownership from day one, on a platform with live enterprise customers and serious data volume.
  • A clear path to grow as the engineering function grows.

  • Competitive compensation packages
  • Company share option scheme
  • Flexible work arrangements
  • Access to the latest technology and tools

Interview Process

Three conversations, no take-home task. We move quickly and you'll hear from us at every stage.

  1. 30-minute intro call. Role overview, your background, and initial alignment on what you're looking for.
  2. 60-minute technical interview with our Head of Engineering. The core of the process. We'll walk through a system you've built and owned (the problem, your decisions, what you'd change), how you approach design, review and quality, and how you've led other engineers. We'll also talk through a real problem from our platform so you can see how we think and we can see how you think.
  3. 30-minute final interview with our CEO (Michael Flanagan). A conversation about how you work, what you care about, and how you'd fit the way our team operates. We'll cover our strategy and where engineering sits in it so you can make an informed decision about us.

We'll come back to you promptly after the final stage with a decision and, where it's a yes, a full offer.

Job Description

Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking! Our vision is fast technology, fair service, and honest values. All at the tap of a phone, all the time.

Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking! We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way.

We’re a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We’re a bank, but better: fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone. We employ more than 3,000 people across our London, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester offices.

Our technologists are at the very heart of Starling and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment that is all about building things, creating new stuff, and disruptive technology that keeps us on the cutting edge of fintech. We operate a flat structure to empower you to make decisions regardless of what your primary responsibilities may be, innovation and collaboration will be at the core of everything you do. Help is never far away in our open culture, you will find support in your team and from across the business, we are in this together!

The way to thrive and shine within Starling is to be a self-driven individual and be able to take full ownership of everything around you: From building things, designing, discovering, to sharing knowledge with your colleagues and making sure all processes are efficient and productive to deliver the best possible results for our customers. Our purpose is underpinned by five Starling values: Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim For Greatness.

Hybrid Working

We have a Hybrid approach to working here at Starling - our preference is that you're located within a commutable distance of one of our offices so that we're able to interact and collaborate in person. We don't like to mandate how much you visit the office and work from home, that's to be agreed upon between you and your manager.

Our Data Environment

Our Data teams are excited about the value of data within the business, powers our product decisions to improve things for our customers and enhance effective and agile decision making, regardless of what their primary tech stack may be. Hear from the team in our latest blogs or our case studies with Women in Tech.

We are looking for talented data professionals at all levels to join the team. We value people being engaged and caring about customers, caring about the code they write and the contribution they make to Starling. People with a broad ability to apply themselves to a multitude of problems and challenges, who can work across teams do great things here at Starling, to continue changing banking for good.

Requirements

We have built our entire banking platform in house and mostly in Java. We are looking for people who want to work on building the tooling that is used by our engineers on a daily basis.

We are looking for people who are truly full stack, and are as comfortable polishing their javascript front end as they are debugging the innards of their java applications database interactions, or standing up infrastructure with terraform. We are looking for people who can:

  • Design REST apis.
  • Code backend services, ideally using Java, or another other server side compiled language.
  • Develop modern front ends, ideally using React and Redux.
  • Get their code into the cloud and support it there, ideally on AWS.
  • Believe in clean coding, simple solutions, automated testing and continuous deployment.
  • Like to take ownership of a feature from the original idea through to live.
  • Think (like us) that a small number of empowered developers is the right way to deliver software.

Company Benefits

  • 33 days holiday (including flexible bank holidays)
  • An extra day’s holiday for your birthday
  • 16 hours paid volunteering time a year
  • Part-time and/or flexible hours available for most roles
  • Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme
  • Life insurance at 4x your salary
  • Hybrid/remote working
  • Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton
  • Generous family-friendly policies
  • Varied social groups set up and run by our employees
  • Perkbox membership giving access to retail discounts, a wellness platform for physical and mental health, and weekly free and boosted perks
  • Access to initiatives like Cycle to Work, Salary Sacrificed Gym partnerships and Electric Vehicle (EV) leasing

Full details are available on our careers site

Interview Process

Interviewing is a two way process and we want you to have the time and opportunity to get to know us, as much as we are getting to know you! Our interviews are conversational and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious. In general you can expect the below, following a chat with one of our Talent Team:

  • Stage 1 - 30 mins with one of the team
  • Stage 2 - Take home challenge
  • Stage 3 - 90 mins technical interview with two team members
  • Stage 3 - 45 min final with an executive and a member of the people team
