Job Description

You 9ll join a small team where design carries real weight, as the designer in a lean squad with a senior product manager and two engineers. Your PM sets the direction for the squad, and you 9ll own the design that brings it to life, taking work from early concepts to something in members' hands. You won 9t be doing it alone. Our designers work closely across squads, with product and design crits every week, and you 9ll have a lot of support from Craig, our VP of Design, and our senior designers as you grow into the role.

What you 9ll be doing:

  • Turning complex problems into simple experiences. Working closely with your PM, you 9ll take complex problems and design the flows and prototypes that make them feel simple and effortless for members.
  • Crafting experiences people love using. Yonder feels different from other finance apps because of how much we obsess over the craft. You 9ll design beautiful, enjoyable products that feel premium and worth coming back to. This is where we expect you to shine.
  • Running research. Designers here don 9t sit at arm's length from members. You 9ll run research alongside your PM, testing concepts and running usability sessions, and build up to leading your own research projects. If this is newer to you, we 9ll help you get there.
  • Working shoulder to shoulder with your squad. You 9ll work in the open with your PM and engineers from the first sketch, solving problems together so the final product feels like it was built by one team.
  • Balancing speed with polish. Some weeks you 9ll put scrappy ideas in front of members just to learn. Other times you 9ll slow right down to get the details right. Knowing which a problem needs takes judgement, and we 9ll help you build it.
  • Contributing to our design system. You 9ll add to it and refine it, so it helps the whole team move fast without losing consistency or quality.

You 9re a great fit if...

  • Your craft is the strongest thing about your work. Typography, layout, colour, spacing, hierarchy, motion. Visual execution is where you stand out, and you can 9t leave the details alone until they 9re right.
  • You have a few years of experience, including some in product. You 9ve been designing for a few years, and for at least the last couple you 9ve been working on digital products and shipping work people use. You might have started out in brand or marketing design and moved across, and now you want an in-house product role where you can learn how great products get made.
  • You care about how things feel on a phone. Yonder lives on a smartphone. Ideally you 9ve shipped native mobile experiences, but if not, you 9ve designed digital interfaces and you 9re keen to treat mobile as its own craft.
  • You want to be involved end to end. You might have a specialism, but you want to be part of every stage, from talking to members and shaping ideas to sweating the final details. We don 9t have researchers, content designers or copywriters, so you 9ll get to grow across all of it, with support.
  • You want feedback. You ask for it, take it well and act on it. You 9ll get a lot of it here, and the people who grow fastest are the ones who go looking for it.
  • You communicate openly and often. You share early, bring people into your process and see engineers and PMs as creative partners.
  • You care about impact, not output. You believe shipping a feature doesn 9t count unless it helps members, and you want to know whether what you shipped made a difference.
  • You work like it 9s 2026. You experiment with new tools and ways of working. We use AI a lot, and we want someone curious enough to find the edges of what it can do for design.

This role isn 9t for you if...

  • You want to be told exactly what to do. You 9ll get a lot of support and feedback here, but you 9ll still own your work and make the calls on it. We 9re here to help you get it right, not to hand you a spec.
  • You prefer working solo with your headphones on. Design at Yonder is collaborative by nature. You 9ll constantly be talking with members, bouncing ideas around with PM's or engineers, and shaping solutions with your squad. If you 9re not energised by that, you 9ll find it tough here.
  • You want a fully remote role. We 9re office-first. You 9ll be in our Shoreditch office at least three days a week, because that 9s where the best collaboration happens. Beyond that, we 9re flexible.
  • You want months to polish one project. We move quickly. Sometimes you 9ll need to be scrappy and ship fast to learn. If you need every project to be perfect before it sees daylight, this won 9t be the right fit.

Company Benefits

  • 35 holidays a year (27 + 8 public holidays)
  • £500 learning and training allowance every year
  • Monthly team breakfast and social events
  • Free breakfast, snacks, and stocked drinks fridge
  • We’re office-first, based in Old Street
  • We pay 75-90th percentile in our industry, plus equity
  • Private Healthcare, including vision, dental & mental health
  • Opportunity to try loads of restaurants across London
  • 16 weeks enhanced parental leave
  • Cycle to work scheme

Job Description

Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking! Our vision is fast technology, fair service, and honest values. All at the tap of a phone, all the time.

Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking! We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way.

We’re a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We’re a bank, but better: fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone. We employ more than 3,000 people across our London, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester offices.

Our technologists are at the very heart of Starling and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment that is all about building things, creating new stuff, and disruptive technology that keeps us on the cutting edge of fintech. We operate a flat structure to empower you to make decisions regardless of what your primary responsibilities may be, innovation and collaboration will be at the core of everything you do. Help is never far away in our open culture, you will find support in your team and from across the business, we are in this together!

The way to thrive and shine within Starling is to be a self-driven individual and be able to take full ownership of everything around you: From building things, designing, discovering, to sharing knowledge with your colleagues and making sure all processes are efficient and productive to deliver the best possible results for our customers. Our purpose is underpinned by five Starling values: Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim For Greatness.

Hybrid Working

We have a Hybrid approach to working here at Starling - our preference is that you're located within a commutable distance of one of our offices so that we're able to interact and collaborate in person. We don't like to mandate how much you visit the office and work from home, that's to be agreed upon between you and your manager.

Our Data Environment

Our Data teams are excited about the value of data within the business, powers our product decisions to improve things for our customers and enhance effective and agile decision making, regardless of what their primary tech stack may be. Hear from the team in our latest blogs or our case studies with Women in Tech.

We are looking for talented data professionals at all levels to join the team. We value people being engaged and caring about customers, caring about the code they write and the contribution they make to Starling. People with a broad ability to apply themselves to a multitude of problems and challenges, who can work across teams do great things here at Starling, to continue changing banking for good.

Requirements

We have built our entire banking platform in house and mostly in Java. We are looking for people who want to work on building the tooling that is used by our engineers on a daily basis.

We are looking for people who are truly full stack, and are as comfortable polishing their javascript front end as they are debugging the innards of their java applications database interactions, or standing up infrastructure with terraform. We are looking for people who can:

  • Design REST apis.
  • Code backend services, ideally using Java, or another other server side compiled language.
  • Develop modern front ends, ideally using React and Redux.
  • Get their code into the cloud and support it there, ideally on AWS.
  • Believe in clean coding, simple solutions, automated testing and continuous deployment.
  • Like to take ownership of a feature from the original idea through to live.
  • Think (like us) that a small number of empowered developers is the right way to deliver software.

Company Benefits

  • 33 days holiday (including flexible bank holidays)
  • An extra day’s holiday for your birthday
  • 16 hours paid volunteering time a year
  • Part-time and/or flexible hours available for most roles
  • Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme
  • Life insurance at 4x your salary
  • Hybrid/remote working
  • Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton
  • Generous family-friendly policies
  • Varied social groups set up and run by our employees
  • Perkbox membership giving access to retail discounts, a wellness platform for physical and mental health, and weekly free and boosted perks
  • Access to initiatives like Cycle to Work, Salary Sacrificed Gym partnerships and Electric Vehicle (EV) leasing

Full details are available on our careers site

Interview Process

Interviewing is a two way process and we want you to have the time and opportunity to get to know us, as much as we are getting to know you! Our interviews are conversational and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious. In general you can expect the below, following a chat with one of our Talent Team:

  • Stage 1 - 30 mins with one of the team
  • Stage 2 - Take home challenge
  • Stage 3 - 90 mins technical interview with two team members
  • Stage 3 - 45 min final with an executive and a member of the people team
