Are there downsides to working in popular fields?

A lot of stuff is subject to the rule of cool. Developers very much like things that are tech cool and that's evident in what the most coveted areas are, which I'd imagine are AI, robotics, aerospace, gaming. Those attract from some examples that I've heard, those can burn through developers quite a bit because they can afford to because the interest generated is so high.
